Le Chteau Margaux a toujours fait partie des plus grands domaines du Mdoc. Lors du classement de 1855, il obtint la note suprme de 20/20.
Seul Premier Grand Cru Class sur la commune de Margaux, il reste un des noms les plus vocateurs du vignoble bordelais.
Les vins de longue garde qui y sont produits sont parfums, lgants et rputs pour allier finesse et puissance. On y retrouve des armes profonds de cassis et de mre avec lesquels se mlent, aprs quelques annes, des senteurs plus volues de tabac et de cdre.
Bien que sa concentration tannique soit souvent exceptionnelle, il est rare dy dtecter de lastringence.
Le nom de Margaux transcende son vin et voque le raffinement suprme, on parle ici d'un des symboles de la culture franaise

Histoire du Chteau

Le Chteau Margaux rgne incontestablement sur le sud du Haut Mdoc depuis le 17e sicle. Premier claret que l'on retrouve dans la fameuse maison d'enchres Christie's, il est aussi premier de la classe lors du classement de 1855 lorsqu'il obtient, en plus de son titre de Premier Grand Cru Class, la note parfaite de 20/20.
Tourn vers l'excellence ds ses premiers pas, le Chteau Margaux surmonte les crises (rvolution franaise, guerres, phylloxra) grce des investissements importants de ses propritaires tour tour fascins par le potentiel infini de ce terroir.

En 1977, Andr Mentzelopoulos achte Margaux. Cet homme daffaires grec (il possde lentreprise Felix Potin) sduit par les colonnes ioniques du chteau (souvent appel le Versailles du Mdoc ) qui lui rappellent sa Grce natale dbute un formidable programme dinvestissements. Son action est spectaculaire que ce soit dans le vignoble, dans les chais ou au chteau. Il met en place le drainage, les replantations Il remet lhonneur le Pavillon Rouge. Il redfinit le Pavillon Blanc du Chteau Margaux. Il introduit llevage en barriques neuves, planifie la construction du premier grand chai enterr de la rgion et, enfin, il fait restaurer le chteau.
Aprs son dcs en 1980, cest sa fille Corinne Mentzelopoulos qui prend la direction de Chteau Margaux et poursuit luvre de son pre profitant de la demande mondiale exponentielle pour les vins de Bordeaux partir de 1982.
En 2013, un troisime vin voit le jour pour affiner, encore plus, la qualit du premier et du second vin.
En 2015, cest un nouveau chai, dessins par Norman Foster, qui permet de mettre en uvre une vinification haute-couture : Margaux retrouve son rang.

Aujourd'hui

2009, 2010, 2015, 2016 et une exceptionnel trilogie 2018, 2019, 2020 confirment que la place de Chteau Margaux en haut du classement de 1855 est plus que jamais mrite.

The 2015 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Medium garnet-purple colored, the nose features oh-so-seductive notes of warm blackberries, cassis and black forest cake with touches of forest floor, sandalwood, anise and cigar boxes plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers taut, muscular, densely packed black fruits and exotic spice flavor layers supported by a very firm backbone of grainy tannins with oodles of freshness and a long, savory finish. It is tightly knit and a little reticent at this very youthful stage; afford it at least 15 years in the cellar, and it will open out into a classic Chateau Margaux of incredible proportions. Readers may be interested to know that this wine is beautifully packaged in a special commemorative bottle honoring winemaker Paul Pontellier, who passed away in 2016. The gold-etched black bottle bears the message, Hommage Paul Pontellier at the bottom. This 2015 is an achingly beautiful swan song from an incredibly gifted winemaker, taken from us too soon. In my view, this alone makes this vintage more than worth the investment for the many lovers of history in a bottle.

This is a haunting young wine that shows you a subtle and hidden strength on the nose with rose petals, currants, currant leaves, stones and plums. Wonderful ripeness yet brightness, too. Takes your breath away with the intensity and structure. Full-bodied, powerful and muscular, yet there's an agile undertone to the whole thing. Compact and condensed. A new legend for Margaux. The 1961 that didn't happen. Try in 2024.

Notation Wine Spectator

Sublime, with captivating sandalwood, black tea and mesquite aromas that infuse the core of gently steeped red and black currant and raspberry fruit. The structure is seamless and thoroughly embedded throughout, letting warm tar, lilac, juniper and iron notes display themselves at will through the finish. The finish is about as long as it gets, with echoes of fruit and warm earth that should prove haunting when this reaches full maturity. Best from 2030 through 2050. 10,833 cases made. JM

The grand vin is the 2015 Chteau Margaux and it's as good a wine as I've ever tasted. Coming from just over one-third of the total production and a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and the balance Petit Verdot, brought up in 100% new French oak, its deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a thrilling bouquet of crme de cassis, toasted spice, hints of toasty oak, and cedar wood. Incredibly elegant and finesse-driven, yet packed with fruit, depth, richness, and structure, it has as much class as you can fit inside a glass. While the vintage provides plenty of upfront charm, this is a wine to cellar for at least a decade, and enjoy over the following 40+ years.

Notation Quarin

Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez intense, fin, fruit, pur, avec une ambiance aromatique diffrente des autres millsimes, plus proche de l'encens et des pices, plus loigne des fleurs. Moelleux l'attaque et de suite dense, le vin fond au palais, extrmement savoureux. Riche en milieu de bouche, il stagne, puis se met fondre avant de s'achever trs long, trs puissant, noble et incrachable. Tannicit un brin plus prononce que sur d'autres annes.
