Anglus est certainement l'un des chteaux qui a progress le plus au cours de ces trente dernires annes. Cette ascension fulgurante lui a valu, lors de la rvision du classement de Saint-milion en 1996, le rang de Premier Grand Cru class B. Un mariage audacieux de cpages, dont une grande proportion de cabernet franc, une onctuosit, une puret et une lgance rare. Voil en quelques mots ce qui dfinit le style de ce chteau lgendaire. En 2012 Il rejoint avec le nouveau classement les emblmatiques Chteau Cheval Blanc et Chteau Ausone. Il accde ainsi l'lite trs restreinte de l'appellation Saint-Emilion avec le rang Premier Grand Cru class A. D'ailleurs, pour clbrer son ascension parmi les plus grands, le millsime 2012 s'est habill d'une bouteille au design unique, srigraphie noir et or.

Histoire du Chteau

Le vignoble dAnglus est situ au cur dun amphithtre naturel, domin par trois glises. Et dans cet espace bni des dieux, on entendait les cloches de ces 3 glises sonnerlAnglus. Le nom tait trouv,
Cest la fin du XVIIIme sicle que la famille de Board de Laforest sinstalle Saint-Emilion.
Au dbut du XXme sicle, Maurice de Board de Laforest hrite du domaine. Il lagrandit en y ajoutant notamment en 1920 un enclos de trois hectares, nomm lAnglus.

Jacques et Christian de Board de Laforest poursuivent luvre de leur pre et des gnrations prcdentes.
La proprit est classe en 1954. En 1985, Hubert de Board de Laforest le fils de Jacques prend la direction du domaine, qui compte maintenant une vingtaine dhectares. Il est rejoint en 1987 par son cousin Jean-Bernard Greni le gendre de Christian.
En 1996, Angelus est class Premier Grand Cru Class.
Stphanie de Board-Rivoal, fille dHubert, rejoint le domaine en 2012.
2012 est galement lanne de laccession dAngelus au titre de Premier Grand Cru Class A.

Aujourdhui, Prsidente Directrice Gnrale d'Anglus, Stphanie de Board-Rivoal, reprsente la 8me gnration de la famille de Board de Laforest, incarne dsormais Anglus.
Il lui revient de poursuivre le travail de son pre, de son grand-pre et de ses aeux avec pour seul objectif de continuer faire grandir Angelus.

A blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the deep purple-black colored 2017 Anglus is a little closed to begin, opening out beautifully to notes of baked plums, fresh blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of mocha, bay leaves, beef drippings and wood smoke plus a touch of roses. Medium to full-bodied with a great density of mid-palate fruit and firm, fine-grained tannins, it finishes long and earthy with a compelling lift.

This is so pure and aromatic with a level of complexity and refinement for the vintage that few have. Sweet tobacco, flowers, herbs and stone with underlying richness of fruit. It opens on the palate to a full body that is tight and reserved with an extremely focused tannin mouth feel. Length and excitement at the end. Very polished Anglus. A blend of 70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc. Drink in 2024 and onwards.

Notation Wine Spectator

This is jazzed up a bit, with dark anise and black tea aromatics leading off, followed by juicy blackberry, boysenberry and bramble notes. Has some flashy spice on the finish and some expensive-feeling toast, but everything is in lockstep as this moves along.

The top wine here is terrific, and the 2017 Chateau Angelus is in the top two or three wines on the Right Bank. Checking in as 70% Merlot and a full 30% Cabernet Franc, it shows the slightly more elegant, polished style favored at the estate these days yet still packs ample richness and depth. Deep purple-hued with awesome creme de cassis-like fruit as well as plenty of unsmoked tobacco, new saddle leather, white truffle, and white chocolate aromas and flavors, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is a wine of power and elegance. You could be excused for drinking bottles even today, but ideally, it should be given 7-8 years of bottle age, at which point it's going to evolve for 25-30 years.

Notation Jancis Robinson

Inky crimson. Redolent of classy and spicy oak but the fruit fragrance is there too, waiting to emerge after the chocolate dies back. A fine note of graphite and Cabernet Franc leafy (but fully ripe) freshness. Spicy and fresh on the palate. Rich and finely textured, with the oak giving way to the fruit on the palate. Very good balance even at this early stage. Savoury dark-chocolate, clean finish.

Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez intense, fin, fruit, mr, avec une note trs originale d'aiguille de pin cette anne. Tendre l'attaque, juteux au dveloppement, trs, trs fruit, savoureux, le vin fond au palais, sur un corps minutieux dou d'clat dans le got. Il s'achve droit sur une belle longueur sveuse et suave. C'est du Anglus !
